capture gold medals in Pro-Am classes

LAKE HAVASU CITY, AZ (October 12, 2003) -- Kawasaki racers Steven Dauliach in Pro Ski and Dustin Farthing in Pro Runabout 1200 along with Yamaha Masao Fiujisama in Pro Freestyle captured the Pro Gold Medals Sunday as the 22nd International Jet Sports Boating Association (IJSBA) World Finals of personal watercraft racing concluded here Sunday. The eight-day event was held on Lake Havasu.

For France's Dauliach and Japan's Fiujisama, it was their first IJSBA Pro World Championship while Farthing, of Port St. Lucie, FL, won his fifth world title.

Winning gold medals in the final Pro-Am races of the eight-day event were: Eric Lagopoulos, Longboat Key, FL, in Pro-Am Runabout 800 SuperStock on a Sea-Doo; Janelle Barr, Renton, WA, in Pro-Am Women Ski on a Kawasaki and New Zealand's Kelle Sketon in Pro-Am Women Runabout on a Kawasaki.

Dauliach qualified first on Saturday in Pro Ski, then won the first 10-lap moto and earned his crown with an assist from a Chris MacClugage miscue in the second. Using a two-moto format, the tiebreaker was the finishing position in the second moto. Daulich finished first in Moto 1 and trailed MacClugage throughout the deciding Moto 2. MacClugage grabbed the holeshot in Moto 2 and appeared to have his eighth IJSBA Pro World Championship locked up until he missed a log jump obstacle on the course during the seventh lap.

"I am so happy, so grateful, so tired and so excited and I almost don't know what else to say but thank you to my great team, my incredible Kawasaki, and even to Chris a little," said Dauliach as he celebrated his triumph at the water's edge. "I don't know if I would have caught Chris or not, but we already had a great race going so I knew we would be close at the finish. I thought I saw Chris miss the log jump, but when I crossed the finish line, I didn't know for sure that I was the IJSBA World Champion."

MacClugage, finished a frustrating event with the bronze in Pro Ski, behind Dauliach and Las Vegas' Rob Flores, who earned the silver on a Kawasaki, and the silver behind Farthing in Pro Runabout 1200.

Farthing earned his gold with a 2-1 finishes in his motos.

Featuring nearly 1,400 entries from nearly 39 U.S. States and 34 nations, the IJSBA World Finals is the premier PWC racing extravaganza in the world.

Racing was held for the fifth straight year on the grounds of the Crazy Horse RV Resort and Campground.

In Pro Freestyle, Japan's crowd-pleasing Masao Fiujisama defeating a stellar field after a special tiebreaker program against four-time IJSBA World Champion Eric Malone. Malone, Duncansville, Pa., and Fiujisama tied with 48.8 scores each after their two minute programs in the regular portion of the competition. In the deciding 1-minute tiebreaker programs, Fiujisama received a 49.0 score on a Yamaha from the panel of international judges while Malone received a score of 48.5 for the silver medal on a Polaris.

2001 IJSBA World Champion Alessander Lenzi of Brazil, who won Saturday's qualifying program, earned the Bronze medal with a score of 48.3 on a Yamaha.

Team USA won the IJSBA Nation's Cup, awarded to the country whose top riders record the best finishes in the world championship classes. The USA has won for the fourth straight year but needed a tie-breaker to pull it out this year. England, with it's best showing ever at this event, was second with 300 points, followed by France with 269, Japan with 234 and Canada rounded out the top five with 232.

Logopoulos was third in the first 10-lap moto in Pro-Am Runabout 800 SS, but roared to the top spot in the second to secure his first IJSBA Pro-Am World Championship. The silver went to Thailand's Nungskol Thanettrakool, who won Moto 1 and was fourth in Moto 2 on a Sea-Doo. With 5-2 moto finishes, the bronze medal went to Chris Heinrich, Buena Park, CA, on a Sea-Doo.

In earning her first IJSBA Pro-Am World Championship, Barr rode her Kawasaki to the top spot in both 8-lap motos while second in Pro-Am Women Ski went to Denver's Kelly Stuhr-Kantola with 3-2 finishes on another Kawasaki.

Japan's Yuki Kurahashi went 2-3 on a Kawasaki to earn the bronze.

Three year's after winning her first IJSBA IJSBA World Championship in Pro-Am Women Runabout, Skelton dominated the class this weekend winning both qualifiers on her Kawasaki after qualifying first.

Renee Hill, Riverside, CA, claimed the silver medal with 2-2 finishes on a Sea-Doo while the bronze went to Dawna Boggs, Livermore, CA, on a Sea-Doo.

In the battle of the manufacturers for IJSBA World Championships, Kawasaki won 10 crowns this week while Sea-Doo earned six, Yamaha five and Polaris one.
